According to Jordan, John W., "A Century and a Half of Pittsburg and Her People, v. III, Lewis Publishing Company (1908), Frederick was a farmer from Prussia. He served in the German army and, together with his wife and one son, in 1860 came to the United States. His other sons had preceded him. He and his wife were members of St. Paul's German Evangelical Lutheran Church.
