- According to the Ligonier Township tax records for 1829, Ligonier Township Tax Records, 1829-1842, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, compiled by William L., Iscrupe, Southwest Pennsylvania Genealogical Services (1977), a William, age 9, was the son of James Ashcom in 1829, although William is shown as the son of John in 1831.
According to the 1850 census, William, age 29, was shoemaker. He lived in Ligonier Borough/Township with his wife "Rebecka" and their children John A, age 8, Catharine, age 7 and Sarah E., age 5.
According to Hedley, Capt. Fenwick Y. ed., Old and New Westmoreland (The American Historical Society) 1918, William was a shoemaker in the Ligonier Valley his entire life. He was a Republican and held various township offices. For a number of years he served as a steward of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ligonier. According to Hedley, William died in 1899, although according to Ligonier Valley Cemetery, William died on February 4, 1906.
The following obituary was published in The Ligonier Echo (Ligonier, Pennsylvania) on February 7, 1906:
WILLIAM ASHCOM
William Ashcom, the second oldest man in Ligonier and grandfather of Mrs. H.S. Denny, died Monday evening at 9:15, February 5, 1906, of a complication of diseases aged 84 years and 11 months, having been born March 5, 1821. The funeral takes place today, Wednesday afternoon, at 1 o'clock in the M.E. church of which he was a consistent member for many years. Services conducted by his pastor, Rev. . H. Sanner. Interment in Valley cemetery.
