- Wilhelm graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1928. He went on to become a Major General in the U.S Army, earning the Army Distinguished Service Medal as a Major General for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in a position of great responsibility to the Government of the United States, during the period June 1954 to May 1962, and, prior to that, a Silver Star as a Colonel for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 1st Armored Division during World War II. In the late 1950s, he was the commanding general of the U.S. Army Armor Center at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
