- Walter followed in his father's footsteps and became a Methodist minister. According to a press release issued by the Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO) on September 29, 1011, he attended MTSO, earning a Master of Divinity in 1964 and a Doctor of Ministry in 1974. After several years of local church ministry in the West Ohio Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Dickhaut served MTSO in an adjunct faculty role while he pastored the Summit Avenue Church and led Metropolitan Ministries, the Southside Settlement and Methodists for Church Renewal. In 1980, he joined the faculty of Bangor Theological Seminary in Maine, where he taught preaching and served as academic dean. He retired in 1998 as the Fogg Professor of Sacred Rhetoric and Oratory, and now (2011) lives in London, Ohio.
