  • Notes
    • The following obituary was obtained from The Bedford Gazette, Bedford, Pennsylvania, and was transcribed by Sheryl Kelso and made available on pa-roots.org (http://www.pa-roots.org/data/read.php?52,563149,563149#msg-563149):

Friday, February 19, 1909 - Mary A. Ashcom was born November 14, 1821, at Pipers and died February 13 at the home of her son-in-law, Col. William Lauder at Riddlesburg in her 87th year.

Her parents were John Wheeler and Elizabeth (Piper) Smith and she was married to Charles W. Ashcom on December 25, 1843, at Woodbury. She was the mother of seven children, five of whom survive: Ed. S. Ashcom of Dayton, O.; Mrs. William Lauder of Riddlesburg; Mrs. William Kelly of Valceen, Mich.; Mrs. Clara Akers of Youngstown, O.; and Miss Ada Ashcom of New York City. One sister, Mrs. Dr. Henry of Everett, also survives.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at the home of Mr. Lauder, where the deceased had made her home for the last 15 years. Rev. R. H. Colburn was the officiating clergyman. After the services at the house the remains were taken to Everett for interment.

Mrs. Ashcom was one of the landmarks of Bedford County. Her grandfather, Col. John Piper, and his father, James Piper, were noted in Colonial and Revolutionary times, both holding high offices in the commonwealth. James Piper was one of the original settlers in Bedford County and built what was known as Fort Piper, which is still standing. Her grandfather on her father's side was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. C. W. Ashcom, her husband, died in 1874. He was a member of the Legislature, Collector of Internal Revenue and, with General Patton, was the first lay delegate to the General Conference of the Methodist Church. His father was also one of the early settlers of Bedford County near Bloody Run and was baptized by the immortal Wesley. On all sides of the house and in her married life she is perhaps one of the leading historical lives of this county, and with her passes away from Bedford County the connecting link of the Colonial and Revolutionary times.

"Grandmother" Ashcom, as she was known by both young and old, was loved and respected by all. She will be missed in the home, in the church and in the community.
