  • Notes
    • According to a handwritten "Family Record", probably from a family Bible, obtained from Emma Johnson Farmin, Ida was born on June 11, 1877. This source is believed to be generally accurate and will be relied upon unless other sources require a different conclusion. The Family record incorrectly shows Ida's middle name as "Newton" and a related handwritten "Family Tree" incorrectly shows Ida as Henry's wife rather than his daughter.

Ida was purportedly born on a boat on the Erie Canal. Thus, she was technically born in New York, although she claims Pennsylvania as her birthplace on the U.S. censuses taken throughout her life.

At some point and for reasons unknown, Ida May changed her given name to "Irilla Agness" and she went by "Rilla" or "Rila".

According to email correspondence in July 2017, with Marion Ward Darraugh, whose sister was married to Robert Griffith (Ida's son), Marion visited Ida many times both before and after she went to the retirement home in Lynden, Washington. Marion always called her Mrs. Griffith. Ida was very small woman, probably not even five feet tall. Ida told Marion that that she was born on a barge on the Erie Canal and she was a servant for the Griffiths starting at the age of 16. Ida told Marion that her husband was "fierce" and and that when he was dying she was afraid to put him in the hospital but the doctor insisted. Marion said that Ida was very kind. For example, when Robert and Marion's sister graduated from college, Ida presented them with a check to buy a lot on Lake Washington in Union Bay, Washington. Ida had saved all the allotment money that Robert had sent home during WWll. Her children always came first.
