- Joe served with the U.S. Army Motor Vehicle Division in WWII. He was sheltered by a Belgium family during the Battle of the Bulge. Joe died of complications from sugar diabetes.
The following obituary was published in the May 18, 1992 edition of the Arizona (Phoenix) Republic:
Joseph Edward Lilly, 71, of Mesa, a retired real-estate salesman, died May 15, 1992. He was born in Pennsylvania. Survivors include his wife, Marguerite L.; daughters, Marianne Knight, Peggy Sheehan, Tricia and Kathy Allen, Maureen Jaramillo, Beth Green and Suzy Levenda; sons Joe, Jim, John, Jeff, Jerry Bob and Tom; his mother, Marie, four sisters; three brothers; and 14 grandchildren. Scripture reading: 7:30 p.m. Monday, Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 S. Dobson Road, Mesa. Mass: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, St. Timothy's Catholic Church, 1720, E. Guadalupe Road, Mesa.
