- According to the 1920 census, Russell was living with his wife, Whilemina, at the house of her parents in in the 10th Ward of the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
According to the 1930 census, Russell was living with his wife, Minnie, and son Russell, on Broad Street in Pittsburgh. He was a clerk.
According to his WW II Draft Registration Card, completed in 1942, Russell's middle name was "Johnson", he was born February 4, 1897 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was living at 4927 Broad Street and he worked at Continental Roll and Steel Foundry Company in the Grant Building.
The following death notice was published in the June 15, 1979 edition of the Pittsburgh Press:
Butler, Russell J. Sr., on Thur., June 14, 1979 (in Van Buren Point, Dunkirk, N.Y.) beloved husband of Wilhilmina Sonnerfelt (formerly of Pgh. & Harrisburg, Pa.), father of Atty. Russell J. Butler, Jr. of Pgh. & Harrisburg. Friends received 4-10 p.m. Fri. at the McCabe Funeral Home, 9311 Frankstown Rd., Penn Hills, where services will be held on Sat. at 1 p.m.
