- According to Jordan, John W., "A Century and a Half of Pittsburg and Her People," v. III, Lewis Publishing Company (1908), Christian was born in the family's homestead in the 25th ward of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He first attended German schools and then for six years attended the Morris public school. He finished his education in the public schools after a second course in the German schools. At the age of fourteen, he became a clerk in his father's store. He continued to work for his father and then his brother until 1905, when he bought out his brother Herman. In 1908 he as the proprietor of the business. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and the I.O.O.F. He was a Republican and a strict Lutheran.
