- Frank was a captain in the United States Marine Corps. During his service in WW I, Capt. Whitehead earned the Distinguished Service Cross and the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism while serving with the Fifth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., in action near St. Etienne, France, 4 October 1918. Although severely wounded, Captain Whitehead showed exceptional coolness and bravery in his selection of machine-gun sites and in routing the enemy while under heavy machine-gun fire.
