- According to the 1930 Census, Charlotte (b. abt. 1899) was the wife of John A. Skidmore, living at 667 Center Ave. in Avalon, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania with their daughter, Verna R. (age 2-1/4 [difficult to read]) AND John's mother-in-law, Ella J. Johnson (born abt. 1873). Ella J. is the widow of Harry, and thus Charlotte is the daughter of Harry and Ella.
According to an email from Charlotte's daughter, Verna Skidmore Kuhlber, in 2011, Charlotte was born on the North Side of Pittsburgh, then called Allegheny, a separate municipality, on September 18,1898. She went to school there and to Sunday School at the nearby "Bake Oven" Presbyterian Church, so called because of its shape. In 1909, the same year that Allegheny became a part of the city of Pittsburgh, her family moved to Avalon, a suburb of Pittsburgh. Charlotte was living with her parents on Cleveland Ave. in Avalon when she met Arthur, as he was always called. He was living next door while he was working on the construction of a bridge in Pittsburgh. With him was his sister Florence and her husband Harry Burton, who was the construction foreman. When this job was completed, they moved to Portland Oregon to work in the ship yards during WWI. Arthur was 4-F because of a hearing loss. While in Portland, Arthur asked Charlotte to come out and marry him, which she did. They were in Portland about 1 1/2 years. When they returned to Pittsburgh, Charlotte and Arthur moved in with her mother, who by now was a widow with a mortgage to pay on a house at 667 Center Ave. in Avalon.

CRESTLINE - Mrs. Charlotte E. Skidmore, 70, of 213 John St., died last night at her home following a lingering illness.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., she came to Crestline 30 years ago. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, John A.; one daughter, Mrs. Verna Kuhlber, of Avalon, Pa.; three grandchildren; and one brother, Harry Johnson of BcIIevue, Pa.
