According to a marriage announcement in the September 15, 1899 edition of the Bedford Gazette, John was married to Maude Ashcom, daughter of Edward S. Ashcom in Trinity Church, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. John was described as an employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad for many years. They resided on Staunton Ave. in Pittsburgh.

According to the 1920 census, John and Maude were living in Swarthmore Borough, Delaware Co, Pennsylvania with their children John C. Jr. and Jane Elizabeth.
