    • According to the Pennsylvania Death Certificate of his daughter Estella May, Gilman was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio.

      According to a handwritten "Family Record," probably from a Family Bible, and related "Family Tree", obtained from Emma Johnson, Gilman's middle name was Warren and he was married to Elizabeth on July 4, 1860. These sources are believed to be accurate and will be relied upon unless other sources require a different conclusion.

      According to the 1860 census, Gilman W. Davis, born about 1837, lived with his wife Elizabeth, born about 1839, in the household of Brownlee Johnston in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He was born in Ohio and worked as a blacksmith.

      According to the U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles compiled by Historical Data Systems, and available on Ancestry.com, Gilman W. Davis, enlisted in Independent Battery H of the Pennsylvania Light Artillery of the Union Army on February 29, 1864. He was mustered out of service on June 18, 1865 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

      According to the 1870 census, George Davis, born about 1832, lived with his wife Elizabeth, born about 1841, with a daughter Stella, born about 1863. He was born in Ohio and worked as a blacksmith.

      According to the 1880 census, an Estella M. Davis, born about 1863, was living with Eliza Johnston, born about 1820 (widow of Brownlee Johnston). Estella is listed as Eliza's granddaughter. Neither Gilman nor Elizabeth Davis are members of the household; presumably, Elizabeth had died by 1880.

      According to the records of the U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938, available on Ancestry.com, Gilman W. Davis was admitted into the National Military Home near Dayton, Ohio on March 14, 1893, having heart disease and other problems. He was 58 years old, lived in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania and he worked as a blacksmith. He was a widower. His nearest relative was his daughter, Essella (sic.) M. Edgar, 165 McClure Street, Allegheny, Pa.

      According to the 1900 census, Gilman W. Davis, born October 1833, lived at the National Military Home (Incl. Central Branch) in Montgomery, Ohio. He is shown to have been born in Ohio and he was a widower.

      According to the National Cemetery Administration's U.S. Veterans Gravesites, ca.1775-2006, Gilman W. Davis died on 15 Mar 1901 and was buried on the same date at the Dayton National Cemetery, VA Medical Center 4100 West Third Street Dayton , OH 45428, Section M Row 12 Site 22. He is shown to have entered service on February 29, 1864 and served as a privated in the artillery in the Civil War. According to the records of the U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938, available on Ancestry.com, his personal effects were sent to his daughter, Estella M Edgar, 600 Woods Run Ave., Allegheny City, Pa.
