Notes |
- According to the 1900 Census, a "Brown Johnson", born 1869 was married to Maud and was living with his children, Cliford, Margaret and Martin S., in the 18th Ward of the City of Pittsburgh. Given that we know from the 1880 Census that a Brownlee Johnson was born in 1880, probably to John and Hannah Johnson, it will be assumed here, given the unusual name, that Brown was John and Hannah's son, Brownlee. This needs to be confirmed.
According to a death certificate found at: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view2.aspx?FilmNumber=857525&ImageNumber=90, Brown and Maud had a stillbon child on February 3, 1903 in Wheeling, West Virginia. They named the child Frank. He was buried at Peninsula cemetery.
The 1910 census shows "Brown L." (further evidence that this is the Brownlee from the 1880 census), age 40 (i.e., born about 1870), living with Maud and their children in New Kensington, Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. The names of the children in this census are very confusing:
1. Lee Clifford, born abt.1895 (who we will assume is the "Cliford" from the 1900 census),
2. Margaro, born abt. 1897 (who we will assume is "Margaret" from the 1900 census),
3. Sydney, born abt. 1899 (who is probaby "Martin S." from the 1900 census),
4. Cecil H., born abt. 1901 (whose name is very difficult to read),
5. Wanda L, born abt. 1904 (whose name is very difficult to read),
6. Archafala, born abt. 1906 (whose name is very difficult to read),
7. Althea, born abt. 1909 (whose name is very difficult to read).
The 1920 census shows a "Brown O." living with his wife Maud and family in Lower Burrell, Westmoreland Co., Pennsyvlania. The names of their children are similarly confusing:
1. Lee Clifford, born abt. 1895,
2. Cecil H., born abt. 1901,
3. Wanda L., born abt. 1905,
4. Kenneth A., born abt. 1907 (why is he not in the 1910 census?),
5. Goldie A., born abt. 1910 (who is probably "Althea" from the 1910 census),
6. John B., born abt.1914.
Note that Martin S. (probably Sydney) and Archafala are no longer living the home. Martin S. is old enough in 1920 to be on his own, but Archafala is not.
According to the 1930 census, Brownlee and his wife Maud, were living on Earl Avenue, New Kensington, Westmoreland Co, Pennsylvania with their children Wanda L. (who was a Bell Telephone operator) and Goldie A. and John B.
According to Brownlee's grandson, Gerald L. Eberhardt, Brownlee and Maud had 16 children, eight of whom died at birth or as infants.
According to Brown Lee's Death Certificate, Brown died by suicide. According to Brownlee's grandson, Gerald L. Eberhardt,  Brown had a painful and terminal condition called Buerger's disease. Buerger's disease is a rare disease of the arteries and veins in the arms and legs. In Buerger's disease, your blood vessels become inflamed, swell and can become blocked with blood clots. This eventually damages or destroys skin tissues and may lead to infection and gangrene. Buerger's disease usually first shows in the hands and feet and may eventually affect larger areas of your arms and legs. Virtually everyone diagnosed with Buerger's disease smokes cigarettes and the only way to slow the progress of the disease is to quit smoking. The disease is passed along male lines and can skip a generation also. His son Kenneth also suffered from the disease as did Kenneth's son Bob (Screech). Both of them smoked a lot and never stopped. Both died of the disease in their early 50's.
According to Brown Lee's Pennsylvania Death Certificate, Brown's father was Sidney A. Johnson. This is likely incorrect.
