Notes |
- According to William's entry on Find-a-Grave.com, the following obituary appeared in The Renova Record on May 18, 1876:
Ashcom – At his home, in this place, on May 14th, 1876, after a protracted illness, William Wert Ashcom, son of Dr. J. P. and N. M. Ashcom, aged 19 years, 4 months and 16 days.
His funeral services took place in the M. E. Church on Tuesday afternoon, attended by a large assemblage of people. Rev. A. M. Creighton, formerly pastor of the M. E. Church of this place, now of Montoursville M. E. Church, preached the funeral sermon. Appropriate remarks were also made by Rev. Mr. Hunter, pastor of the M. E. Church, this place, and Rev. J. Benson Akers of Hyner’s Run, all of whom were intimately acquainted with the deceased, and who paid high tributes of respect to his life and character. Their remarks were listened to with profound attention. The subject of this notice was an exemplary young man, loved and esteemed by all who knew him. Simple and unaffected in his manners, warm and generous in his nature, noble in his aims, he drew, as with magnetic power, all hearts to him. His highest excellencies were manifest in his Christian life. He was a devout member of the Methodist church, and his loyalty to the cause of Christianity was so strongly implanted within him, that he recently expressed a desire to become a minister of the gospel if he regained his health and was able to obtain means to educate himself for the position.Â
His remains were conveyed to North Point cemetery for burial, followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends.
