Notes |
- Charles married Jennie McNulty in Chicago on Dec 31, 1879. In 1882, he was a cook for J. Barge in Minneapolis. In 1897, he was a cook in Milwaukee and lived at 513 Broadway. He had two girls; Virginia Rebecca "Jennie" in 1883, and Clara Louise "Lou" in 1892. Jennie, his wife, died in July 1893.
Charles had a sister named Lizzie. After the death of her first husband, Lizzie remarried; a man from Minnesota named George Bixby, the brother of Tams Bixby Sr., prominent newspaperman that headed the Dawes Commission that created the State of Oklahoma in 1906 from the Indian Territory.
One side of the family tells a story that Charley Morris was a marshal in the Indian Territory. Another side of the family tells about when his wife died of typhoid fever, Charley had to leave his two young daughters in the care of friendly Indians while he and his father-in-law drove a wagon into Muskogee to get a casket and report the death.
Charles' brother, Joseph D. Morris, had married and eventually settled in Kirkland, Illinois where he owned and managed the Morris Hotel. When Charley was unable to care for his two children, Joseph took the infant, Lou, to live with Joseph's family in Kirkland, Illinois.
Charley married Mary (Cooper) Holmes in Milwaukee on Mar 1, 1898. Maybe his daughter Jennie did not like living with her stepmother and moved into her Aunt Lizzie's house permanently. She would have been 15 then. She was living with the Bixby's in Muskogee, Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in the 1900 census.
Charley found his way to Montana in the spring of 1910, where he and Reuben were cooking for a restaurant in Zortman during the Montana Gold Rush.
The following obituary was transcribed by Richard Goms from the Enterprise Newspaper (July 28, 1910) (Malta, Montana) and published on FindaGrave.com (2011):
Called Home
CHARLES P. MORRIS DIES AT HIS RANCH HOME FRIDAY AFTERNOON.
Charles P. Morris was born in Pittsburg, PA, in 1857 and died of heart disease at his home 5 miles south-west of Malta, Friday, evening, July 22 at 5:30 pm. The deceased had been in very poor health for 3 or 4 years, but since his arrival here about April 1st, under Dr Clay's treatment had for a time seemed much improved. On reaching Malta this spring he made his home with his brother, R. B. Morris, but later built a house, a half mile from the Morris ranch, on a claim that he was holding at the time of his death by squatter's rights. Mr Morris' wife [Jennie McNulty] preceeded him to the great beyond 17 years ago [1893], but he is survived by 2 daughters, Jennie residing in Oklahoma, Lulu, of Kirkland, Illinois, and 2 brothers, R. B. of Malta and Jos. D. of Kirkland, Ill. The latter is critically ill and unable to attend the funeral. The funeral services were held at R. V. Tuckers undertaking room in this city at 2:00 pm Sunday afternoon, Rev Homer Cox, officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Malta Cemetery.
