  • Notes
    • All information regarding George Washington Van Fossen and his family and descendants was obtained in November 2010 from Peter J. Schwab (pschwab@rcgarchitects.com), Baltimore, Maryland. This source will not be repeated.

According to Mr. Schwab, George was named after George Washington because of an Ashcom family connection to George Mason, who was a close friend of George Washington. He probably moved to Wheeling, West Virginia with his brothers and helped operate a nail foundry there.

He was a Methodist Episcopal minister in 1868 to 1870, serving numerous parishes in Pennsylvania, including Bloody Run (later Everett) M.E. Church in 1868.

In 1873, he left the church and began reading the law under I.X. Grier. He formed a partnership with Mr. Grier for a brief period. He later became a lawyer in a law firm with William Jennings Bryan in Denver, Colorado. He was listed as George W. Van Fossen, Lawyer in the City Directory for Tacoma, Washington in 1889-1890. He became a Police Judge in 1890.
