  • Notes
    • The 1870 Census shows a Martha J. Stumbaugh, age 30, living in New Florence Borough, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, with her two sons, John W., age 8, and Frank, age 3.

According to the 1880 Census, John Ashcom lived in New Florence, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania with his wife Jane, age 40, and children Frank, age 12, and Mary E., age 5. The 1880 Census record also shows two other children in the family: a William (18) and George (16) Stumbaugh, who are likely Jane's children from a prior marriage. Martha J.'s 1870 age matches Jane's 1880 age and 1880 William could be 1870 John (they called him William to avoid confusion with his step-father). It is not clear why George does not appear in the 1870 Census or why Frank does not appear in the 1880 Census (unless they are the same person).

The 1900 Census shows Martha J. Ashcom, widow, living alone in West Wheatfield Township, Indiana Co., Pennsylvania. She was born in June 1839. She is shown to be the mother of five children, four of whom are living. Benjamin Ashcom's family (who was John and Martha's son) (but apparently not Benjamin himself), also lived in West Wheatfield Township in 1900. The 1910 Census reads exactly the same, as the 1900 Census, except that Martha is shown as age 70.

Interestingly, but only coincidentally, inasmuch as there is apparently no relation, in 1904, the Altoona Tribune (Altoona, Pennsylvania) reports on a legal proceeding brought by Martha Jane Stombaugh against Samuel Stombaugh, on a charge of desertion. The grand jury returned an indictment on March 16, 1904. The March 19, 1904 story reported on the trial. It states that Samuel was an "old soldier" and that several similar cases had already been tried under a recent act of the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The story reports that Martha Jane testified that she and Samuel were married in 1870 and that they had 10 children, seven of whom had died and three of whom were living. She testified that he deserted her in May 1903. Her attorney stated that Samuel drew a Civil War pension of $24 per month, to which she would be entitled to half under an act of Congress. Stombaugh testified that she was too old to work and relied on the pension to live. On March 21, 1904, the Altoona Tribune reported that Samuel Stombaugh was convicted of deserting his wife and two children. According to a legal notice in the July 16, 1919 edition of the Indiana Progress, Samuel Stombaugh sued for divorce from Martha J. Stombaugh. The January 29, 1929 edition of the Altoona Tribune reported the death of Martha J. Stombaugh at the G.A.R Home in Hawkins (Swissvale), near Pittsburgh. The obituary reports that Mr. Stombaugh died in 1927 in Altoona.

The 1920 Census shows Martha, age 82, living with her son-in-law Frank Johnson and his family in Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania.

Frank Ashcom remembers Martha living with his grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Ashcom, in New Florence late in her life.

According to her death certificate, she was living with her daughter Mary at 316 Marie Ave., Avalon, Pennsylvania at the time of her death in 1920. She died of chronic dysentery.

Martha is buried with, her son and daughter-in-law, Franklin and Mary (Ashcom) Johnson, at Union Dale Cemetery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. There is no headstone.
