- The following obituary was published in the The Herald (Sharon, Pennsylvania) on June 20, 2014:
Martha ‘Marty’ Elaine Martin
Martha (Marty) Elaine Martin, of Stuart, Fla., passed away Friday, June 27, 2014, in Treasure Coast Hospice House in Stuart. She was 83.
She was born Aug. 21, 1930, in Arcadia, Neb., to Caius Ord Twombley and Anna Maud Arnold Twombley. At the age of nine, her family moved to Pennsylvania, eventually settling in Cambridge Springs.
On Sept. 2, 1947, she married Donald Martin, and they shared more than 62 years together before his passing in 2009.
Martha was a homemaker who made sure things ran smoothly while her husband was on the road as a long-haul truck driver. She was lovingly called the “program director” by her children and grandchildren.
Martha was a Girl Scout troop leader and her troop stayed active until they graduated from high school. Many of her girls stayed in contact with her all her life. In addition, she was active in the community as a member and past president of the Gam Sac Mah Women’s Club and also served on the Cambridge Springs school board.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Drakes Mills, Pa., and was active in summer Bible school as her children were growing up.
Martha was an avid swimmer and taught swimming and water aerobics at the YWCA in Meadville. She loved boating and taught all of her children and grandchildren to water ski. Martha was a talented seamstress and enjoyed sewing for her family.
In 1992, Don and Martha moved to Stuart, where she was known as Marty. While at Vista Pines, she established a water aerobics class, and she was active on many social committees. During their retirement, Don and Martha enjoyed traveling and going on cruises. They enjoyed their summers on French Creek in Saegertown and Lake Restoule, Ontario.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda Kretser (Gregory); her son, Craig Martin (Karen); her grandchildren, Seth Kretser (Marci), Kelli Martin, Alissa Kretser (Andrew) and Brittany Martin; and her stepgrandchildren, Troy Martin, Heather Moles (Bryan), Jodi Frazier, James and Justyn Headley, and stepgreat-grandchild, Ronan Moles.
Martha was preceded in death by her daughter, Carrieanna Headley (Jim); and her siblings, Bruce Petersen, Dean Twombley, Elizabeth Bose, Harold Twombley, Hadley Twombley and Vesta Jordan.
Martha was the youngest of eight and will be sadly missed by her surviving sister, Verna Evans, Austin, Texas.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
