Joan Young Leech
October 30, 1925 - March 28, 2015
Joan Young Leech, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, died peacefully on the evening of March 28, 2015, at Casa de Santa Fe in Rocklin, CA, surrounded by her family. She was 89 years old.Â
Joan was born on October 30, 1925, to the late William McClay Young and Jeannette Kelso Young of Avalon, PA. She graduated from Avalon High School in 1943, and in 1947 received a Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and Phi Beta Kappa. It was at Allegheny that she met and fell in love with her classmate Robert Wilson Leech, Jr. In their senior year Joan was the Editor and Bob the Business Manager of the college weekly, the Campus. They were married on August 9, 1947, two months after graduation. Their first home was in Philadelphia, where Bob attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Following his graduation, they headed west to the San Francisco Bay Area, where Bob took a job with the company known today as Chevron. In the years that followed, his job took them from Palo Alto, CA, to Glendale, CA, La Mirada, CA, Salt Lake City, UT, Bismarck, ND, Billings, MT, Pleasant Hill, CA, Perth, Australia, Lafayette, CA, Madrid, Spain, and San Anselmo, CA. Their five children were born in Philadelphia, Palo Alto, La Mirada, Salt Lake City and Perth.Â
Since Bob's retirement in 1985, they have spent summers in a home they had designed and built in Incline Village, NV, overlooking Lake Tahoe, and winters in Sunrise, Rancho Mirage, in southern California. They also continued to indulge their never-fading love of travel, visiting such far flung sites as Antarctica, Samarkand, and the Great Wall of China.Â
In addition to her husband, Joan is survived by three generations whom she adored: her five children: Karen (Dave Hatton) of Irvine, CA; Robert (Diane) of Berkeley, CA; Ellen (Joe Ferreira) of Roseville, CA; Bill (Amy) of Walnut Creek, CA; and Tom (Kim) of Bentonville, AR; her eight grandchildren: David Hatton, Jennifer Mueller, and Ross, Jenna, Connor, Colin, Jeannette and Aiden Leech, and her five great grandchildren: Julia, Bradley and Jacob Mueller, and Beatrix and Eleanor Hatton. She is also survived by her brother and only sibling, Alan Young of San Francisco.
Joan will be greatly missed for her intelligence and sense of humor, but also for her sincere concern for others, her genuine desire to be of help, and her deep love for her family. Her foremost desire throughout her final illness was that she should not be a trial to others. She will always be remembered with love. Her family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of the Casa de Santa Fe senior home in Rocklin, CA, for their care and concern.Â
A memorial gathering will be held in Incline Village in June. For friends who wish to make a donation in her memory, a gift to the National Osteoporosis Foundation or to the will be deeply appreciated.
