      Peter Murie
Death Comes Suddenly To Peter Murie Saturday

Last Saturday night, May 24, at 9:30 o'clock, at his home in this city, occurred the death of Peter Murie aged 68 years, one of the pioneer miners and mine prospectors of the Northern Colorado coal fields. Death was entirely unexpected. Saturday morning Mr. Murie complained of not feeling well but went to his brother's ranch east of Lafayette and worked during the day. On returning home in the evening he ate his supper and seated himself in a chair. he complained of severe pains in his stomach and soon fell from his chair. Medical aid was summoned but before the physician arrived death occurred.

Peter Murie was born in St. Louis, Missouri, January 6, 1856. When two years of age he was taken by his parents to Columbus, Nebraska. Here he grew to manhood and August 5, 1873, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Jane Clinger, who survives. To this union were born nine children, one of whom died in infancy. The eight surviving are: Peter A. of Clein, Montana, Willard, of Lafayette, Mrs. Harriet Laffen of Roundup, Montana, John H. and Walter of Dacona, George of Denver, Mrs. Grace Cress of Portland, Oregon, Clarence of Forte Scue, Missouri, and Thomas of near Lafayette. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Smith of Boulder, and two brothers, George of Denver and Thomas of Lafayette. Eighteen grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren also remain to mourn his loss.

In 1877 Mr. and Mrs. Murie and their children came to Colorado and since that year have resided in and near Lafayette. He followed the occupation of mining and was one of the pioneer miners and prospectors who have located many of the largest producing mines in this district. He was an industrious man and when 20 years of age was baptized into the Latter Day Saints church, of which until his death he continued a faithful member. In his home he was ever a kind and indulgent husband and father and to his neighbors and friends was ever ready to lend a helping hand. Not only in his home circle by by hosts of friends and acquaintances will he be missed.

Funeral services were held at the residence yesterday afternoon, conducted by Elder E. J. Williams of Denver. Burial was made in the Lafayette cemetery."
