    • The following obituary was published in the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat on January 13, 2004 (and was transcribed and available on rootsweb.com):

      WAGNER - Leighton A., 85, died on Jan. 12, 2004. He was born on Aug. 15, 1918, in Coopersdale, and was the son of the late Charles C. and Caroline E. (Gehring) Wagner. Leighton is survived by beloved wife, Mary Louise (Stombaugh), whom he married on Nov. 1, 1941. His death ends their union of 62 years. Leighton was a lifelong resident of Coopersdale and is survived by children, Frederick R., married to former Patricia "Patty" Tay, East Conemaugh; Linda L. Wagner; and Timothy J., married to former Elizabeth "Betsy" Brown; and granddaughter, Rebecca Elizabeth "Becky" Wagner, all of Johnstown; sister, Leora (Wagner) Frederick, Baltimore, Md.; and brother, Raymond R. Wagner, Johnstown. Leighton was an active member for 60 years of the former Cooper Ave. United Methodist Church, which he joined in 1941. There, he served as treasurer for 37 years, former chairperson of the administrative board and a Sunday school teacher. He retired from the city of Johnstown in 1994 after 59 years, 53 of them as maintenance of the parking meters, where he helped install the original 574 in 1941. He retired in 1994 after 56 years as a cooperative weather observer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), where he took daily readings from the station on top of the Public Safety Building. This earned him the Stoll and Holm awards. He also had a part-time TV repair service from 1951 to 1974 where he met many people. He was inducted into the Voter Hall of Fame in Harrisburg on May 23, 1991. He was majority inspector for 50 years for the 21st Ward election board. He was past counselor and recording secretary of the Junior Order of United American mechanics, Council 97, and past district deputy state counselor. He was also a former member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, Division 4-47. He graduated with highest honors from Johnstown Senior High School in 1935. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at William T. Hindman Funeral Home, Chandler Avenue, where service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Jack Rupert of New Day. Interment, Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Day Inc., the American Cancer Society or to a selected charity.
