- According to the 1900 census, at age 16 August was a laborer. According to the 1930 census, August was living with his sister, Mary, and her husband, William Goff in Detroit, Michigan.
According to Anna Mae Schnaubelt Hindin, he later was an alcoholic. He died when he fell and hit his head while drunk in Detroit, Michigan. He worked for Ford Motor Company.
