- In 1862, James was one of 46 pupils entering Central High School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was sometimes referred to as 'the Smithfield Street dungeon'. He later was a distinguished alumnus of Duff's College, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the first mercantile college started in America. At some point, James apparently changed his last name to Houston. In December 1866, he went to Plumer, Venango County, Pennsylvania to work in a grocery store. He returned to Pittsburgh and opened his own grocery store--James W. Houston & Co. Wholesale Grocers, 21 Seventh Ave., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He lived at Pacific Ave., Thirteenth Street, South Side, and at 436 Lincoln Ave., all in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served as President of the Christian Home for Working Girls, 1235 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh.

James W. Houston.
James W. Houston, aged 71. president of the James W. Houston Company, wholesale grocers, died Monday in his home. 328 South Pacific avenue. He was born in County Antrim, Ireland, February 8, 1849, but had lived in the Pittsburgh district since early manhood. Mr. Houston entered the employ of the J. L. Dilworth Company, wholesale grocers, as a bookkeeper, later becoming manager, and in 1881, he engaged in business for himself. Mr. Houston was a director of the Boys' Industrial Home and of the Pittsburgh Association for the Improvement of the Poor and a member of the Tabernacle Presbyterian Church. He leaves his widow. Mrs. Sarah McCutcheon Houston: a daughter, Miss Anne M. Houston,. four sons, John D.. J. Garfield, William S. and A. E. Houston, and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen J. Dunlap and Miss Hannah I. Houston.
