John was originally married to Virginia Riddleberger, who later married the famous baseball player, Hack Wilson. They divorced and he remarried to Blanch Shipe. At the time he married Blanch he was living in Maryland.
According to the Martinsburg, West Virginia city directory of 1913-1914, John J. Hetzel, Jr. was Manager at National Commercial Co.. His home with wife Virginia M. was at 531 W. King St. in Martinsburg. In that same directory, p. 233, National Commercial Co. is listed as a wholesale grocers located at 409 W. Race St., Martinsburg, WV. In the 1915-1916 city directory John Jr. is again listed as Manager National Commercial Co. and his residence is again at 531 W. King St.
John and his second wife, Blanch, lived in Bluefield, West Virginia for a time and had two sons while living there.
