  • Notes
    • According to an email I received from John Ashcom (jashcom@yahoo.com) on September 13, 2008, a Mary Louise Wagner-Leighton told him that she carried Lucy Ashcom (Charles Lewis' wife) out of the home during the 1936 Johnstown Flood.

According to the same email, the following obituary appeared in the Johnstown Tribune Democrat on Saturday Evening, March 6, 1937:

Mrs. Lucy J. (Mickey) Ashcom, aged 80, one of Coopersdale’s oldest residents, died at her home, 40 Cooper Avenue, at 10:30 o’clock last night. She had been bedfast the last two years, but her condition became serious only two weeks ago when she contracted pneumonia.

A native of Westmoreland County, Mrs. Ashcom was born in Laughlintown October 18, 1856, a daughter of James and Elizabeth (Metzler) Mickey. Coming to Johnstown when a young woman, Miss Lucy Mickey and Charles Ashcom were united in marriage November 10, 1878, in the parsonage of the First M. E. Church, now the Franklin Street M. E. Church. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Ashcom made their home on “The Island” locating in Coopersdale immediately before the Johnstown Flood. [“The Island” is now the location of the Gautier Works of Bethlehem Steel].

Her husband, a veteran of the Civil War, was for many years a foreman in the Bessemer Steel Works and was prominent in affairs of the G. A. R., having served two terms as commander of Emory Fisher Post No. 30. He died January 19, 1926. Surviving are the following children: William J. Ashcom, West Taylor Township; George Ashcom, Elder Street; Clency Ashcom, Canton O.; Fred S. Ashcom, 396 Fairfield Avenue; Ross M. Ashcom, Sell Street; Andre C. Ashcom, Lincoln Street, and Florence, wife of George Holsinger, 40 Cooper Avenue. Two sons, Reuben and Robert, predeceased their parents in death. Another son, Charles, died in infancy.

Mrs. Ashcom was a sister of Rev. Paul F. Mickey of Phillipsburg, former pastor of the Barron Avenue U. B. Church; D. R. Mickey of Latrobe and Mrs. Ella Bollinger of Madison, Pa. Two sisters and six brothers are deceased.

A member of the Cooper Avenue M. E. Church from the time of its organization, Mrs. Ashcom was active in church affairs until ill health overtook her. She was an active member of the Missionary Society, the Ladies Aid Society and the Sunday and the Sunday school of the West End church.
