- Mary's husband, Reeder Ashcom, died in 1879, leaving Mary with a very young son, Thomas.
Thomas enlisted in the Army in 1897, at age 18 (although he apparently claimed in was 21 years old). He was discharged on August 20, 1900.
According to the 1900 Census, Mary Ashcom (b. September 1853), a widow, was living with her father, Sydney Diven in Washington, D.C.
