- Robert J. Henkel served as Chief Executive Officer of Ascension Healthcare for five years, before retiring effective June 30, 2017. Mr. Henkel was part of Ascension Health since its creation. In 1992, he joined DePaul Health Center in St. Louis, a member of the Daughters of Charity National Health System. In 1998, he took on a leadership role with Daughters of Charity, which joined with the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System to form Ascension Health in 1999. At Ascension Healthcare, Mr. Henkel initially served as president of the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic States Operating Group, eventually moving up to the role of president of healthcare operations and Chief Operating Officer. Ascension Healthcare is a faith-based organization that includes 141 hospitals and 2,500 sites of care in 2017. It is the nation’s largest Catholic and largest nonprofit health system. During his career, Mr. Henkel earned numerous awards and recognitions, such as being named to Becker's Hospital Review's 2013 list of 130 Nonprofit Hospital and Health System CEOs to Know and its 2012 list of 300 Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know. Mr. Henkel also served as a board member of the Marian Middle School board of directors in St. Louis, a board member of the United Way of Greater St. Louis, a board member with the Coalition to Protect America's Health Care and an advisory board member with the Ascension Health Alliance Leadership Academy. He is also a fellow in the American Collage of Healthcare Executives. Mr. Henkel earned a master's degree in public health from the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as an adjunct profession in the Graduate School of Public Health. He received a Bachelor's Degree from Union College (Schenectady, NY).
