- The following obituary was published in the Roanoke Times on February 20, 2011:
Rose Marie Assenat, 70, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Pittsburgh, Pa., passed away suddenly on Friday, February 18, 2011. Rose and her husband, Jay, moved to Roanoke in 1973 with their four children. Rose had a passion for spending time with family and friends, her church, gardening and creating wonderful memories in all that she did.Â
After retiring from Carilion Health Systems in 2005, she was able to devote more of her time to the people and hobbies she loved.Â
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jay; her children, Brian Assenat and wife, Lisa, Julie Gallagher and husband, Tom, Kenny Assenat, and Kevin Assenat and wife, Beth, all of Roanoke. Her grandchildren were a never ending source of joy for Rose. They are Matthew, Justin and Jennifer Assenat, Daniel and Taylor Gallagher, Zach and Reid Assenat, Hayley and Olivia Assenat, Nick and Emily Shaffer, Kayla and Courtney Stover. Also surviving are Rose's two siblings, Peggy Cook, of Shippensburg, Pa., and Carol O'Hara and husband, Wayne, of Newville, Pa.; as well as multiple nieces and nephews.Â
Rose will be greatly missed by all who had the honor and pleasure to know her. The effects of her faith, generosity and very loving nature will live on in the hearts of those she touched.Â
A Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, February 21, 2011, at St. Andrews Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas Miller and the Rev. Father James Parke officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 20, 2011, from 2 until 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.Â
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Uniform Service Organization, Wounded Warrior Project or the American Cancer Society . Arrangements are being handled by Oakey's Downtown Chapel, 540-982-2100.Â
