- The following biographical sketch appeared on the website of the Medical Archives of The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions:
Louis Allan Erskine was born in Holywood, County Down Northern Ireland. He received his A.B. from the Johns Hopkins University in 1933 and a M.D. in 1937 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Erskine completed his surgical internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1938 with further training at Church Hospital. He was appointed as a surgical fellow at Johns Hopkins in 1939, researching the properties of preserved blood. Erskine served as a captain in the U.S. Army 39th General Hospital unit during World War II. He subsequently joined the staff of Palmerton Hosptial in Pennsylvania. He retired as chief surgeon of Palmerton Hospital in 1976.
