Roy Kenneth Smith June 1, 1920 - June 20, 2010 SALEM - Roy Kenneth Smith wanted to be 90 years old. He achieved that goal when he celebrated his birthday at home in Salem with more than 60 family members in attendance. He was excited to make one more trip to his hometown of Colville, Washington, where he was born in a log cabin on June 1, 1920. He passed away on June 20, 2010 in Spokane, Washington after a helicopter life flight from Colville where he was visiting. Education was essential to Roy and he attended the University of Oregon, as well as Northwest Christian College where he obtained both a degree and an Ordination as a Minister in the Christian Church. He also attended Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky, and then received his Master's Degree in Social Work from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He managed all of this while working full time, sometimes holding multiple jobs. He continued to follow the UNC Tar Heels and proudly wore his UNC jacket in his favorite heavenly Carolina blue. He served six proud years in the United States Navy during World War II as a Chief Petty Officer. His ship, the USS McDougal, had recently left Pearl Harbor and had to return so that he and his fellow sailors could help with the recovery efforts after the December 1941 attack. One of his favorite memories of his Navy career was transporting President Franklin Roosevelt aboard his ship as they came alongside the H.M.S. Prince of Wales and Winston Churchill boarded his ship as they signed the North Atlantic Charter. He married Twila Jennings Murie on February 20, 1970 in Reno, Nevada. He immediately became a loving Father to her daughters, Terri and Sherri, and then a proud and loving Grandfather to Carissa and Jessie. He especially enjoyed the newest addition to the family with the birth of his great-granddaughter, Emery in 2008. Roy had several hobbies over the years including entering sweepstakes and winning prizes and trips for his family, but anyone who knew Roy knows that his true passion was cars. Over the course of his 90 year life he admitted to owning more than 200 different automobiles. He enjoyed reading the comics to his Granddaughters and they want it remembered that he always had a comb so his hair was always immaculately groomed. Roy enjoyed his membership to the Courthouse Athletic Club and until the week before his passing he continued to attend a Silver Sneakers exercise class two to three times a week. Family was the most important part of life for Roy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Emmett Lafayette and Edith Sarah Kulp Smith. He is survived by his wife, Twila of Salem; daughter, Terri Stanley of Salem; daughter, Sherri and son-in-law David Cartwright of Salem; granddaughter, Carissa and grandson-in-law, Ryan Bennett of Salem; granddaughter, Jessie Stanley and her fiance, Bryan Wolf of Salem; great-granddaughter, Emery Bennett of Salem; and his sisters, Doris Connor of Pasco, Washington and Shirlie Rainwater of Kennewick, Washington; along with one nephew, Doug (Kelly) Connor, and niece, Becky (Craig) Cooper all of Pasco, Washington. He is also survived by a large extended family and a host of friends. A Celebration of Life will be held for Roy at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 2, 2010 at City View Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to attend. A family celebration will be held later that day at the home of Dan and Janet Jennings of Salem. There will be a private interment at Willamette National in Portland for his immediate family. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice. A special thank you is offered by the family to the dedicated and knowledgeable staff of both Mount Carmel Hospital, in Colville, Washington, and Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, Washington for the wonderful care and attention they gave Roy during his last stay.
