      Birckhead Rouse, Jr.
      December 13, 1917 - March 14, 2007

      Obituary

Memorial Services for Birckhead Rouse Jr. will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, May 12, 2007 at the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township. Born December 13, 1917, in Baltimore, Md, he died peacefully with his wife Gladys by his side on March 14, 2007. A resident of New Providence for the past forty two years, "Birck" as he was known by his family and friends, had a very successful career in commercial real estate development and mortgage lending. A graduate of Baltimore City College in Baltimore, Md., Temple University in Philadelphia, where he graduated first in his class from the School of Commerce, he spent forty seven years with The Prudential Insurance Company in Newark before retiring as Vice President of Real Estate Investments in 1982. During his career with Prudential he led the development of numerous hotel and commercial center projects in major cities throughout the country including Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu. He then formed his own consulting and development corporation and continued his career with John Portman, the renowned architect from Atlanta, in developing and construction of the Marriott Marquee Hotel/Theatre and Plaza in Times Square. He finally retired in 1993 after successfully leading further commercial real estate development in Jersey City. Birck will be remembered for his dedication to his career, but more so for his dedication and love for his family and church. He was very active in the Presbyterian Church throughout his life, serving on the Board of Trustees, the Finance and Stewardship Committees He particularly enjoyed his bible study group and his many in depth discussions with his pastor and close friend Dr. Rev. Ed Halldorson, senior pastor at the Presbyterian Church in Chatham. His first love, outside of his family and church was golf which started during his early childhood days of caddying at a private country club in Baltimore. His golfing accomplishments included 4 "hole-in-ones" and numerous amateur champion titles in local area tournaments. His golfing travels took him to both Ireland and Scotland, as well as 6 other countries on various renowned courses. Up until his last years, Birck still managed to walk 18 hole rounds often times scoring better than his age. He is survived by his wife Gladys, daughter Gladys (John) Cada from Villa Park, IL, son Richard (Linda) from Geneva, IL., grandchildren John Cada, Adam Rouse, a great-granddaughter, Chloe Cada and brother Joseph Rouse. He was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Birckhead Rouse and a sister Ann Carmack. Memorials in memory of Birckhead Rouse Jr. can be made to the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township, 240 Southern Boulevard, Chatham Township, NJ 07928.
