Actress Evelyn Bohn Krise Would `Light Up Any Room She Walked In'

      February 10, 2004
By Tammie Wersinger, Sentinel Staff Writer

With her pouty lips dabbed in red and big, blue eyes surrounded by long, dark lashes, Evelyn Bohn Krise looked every bit the part of a classic movie star.

However, this actress' life journey took her down a different path than stardom -- that of motherhood and family.

Krise -- military wife, mother of six, grandmother and star in a New York touring theater company in the 1950s -- died Thursday. She was 73.

An article on Page B6 of the Feb. 10 Local & State section about the death of Evelyn Bohn Krise misidentified a character Krise played in Little Women. Krise portrayed Beth.
      ******************************************************************************

"She was just this vivacious woman who would light up any room she walked in," said her daughter, Valerie Krise of Longwood. "She possessed those childlike qualities that made her a good actress. It also made her a fun person to be around."

The elder Krise, who moved to Altamonte Springs in 1977, began her professional acting career at 17. By then, she had graduated from high school early and spent a year in acting classes at Carnegie Tech-Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.

Her parents knew she was destined for the stage when she started performing at age 3.

She landed the first professional role she auditioned for -- that of Bess in the Clare Tree Major's Children's Theater's production of Little Women.

Her work with the Pleasantville, N.Y., theater company took her to stages throughout the Northeast and netted Krise a whopping $35 a week, out of which she paid for lodging and food.

It wasn't the big money of her movie-screen counterparts, but Krise was able to do what she loved and got paid for doing it, her daughter said.

It was during her early acting days in the 1950s that she met renowned Canadian poet Paul O'Neill, who dedicated a 1982 compilation of his works to his longtime friend.

It was during that same time that Evelyn Bohn met George Krise, a military man she met on a bus on her way to a dance.

"He was driving the bus and was outgoing and popular. She was vivacious and sweet and caught his eye," Valerie Krise said. "They just hit it off and were married later that year."

The couple traveled around the globe and had six children in six different parts of the world. George Krise passed away in 1987. Stephen Krise, her eldest son, also died.

After moving to Central Florida, Evelyn Bohn Krise resumed acting and took on another role -- that of "Avon lady." She reached the President's Club level, which is the upper sales tier for the cosmetics company.

"No matter what she was doing, she wanted to do her best," Valerie Krise said. "My mom totally immersed herself into whatever she was doing, whether it was selling Avon, being a military wife, raising six kids or acting."

Although none of Evelyn's children followed their mother to the stage, she did pass the acting bug along to at least one grandchild. Granddaughter Kelly Roseman, 14, of Longwood performs locally and has big dreams of an acting career.

"Grandma's house was full of magic because she had costumes, and when she read books, she did all the voices," Valerie Krise said. "She didn't just read Little Red Riding Hood. She became Little Red Riding Hood and the wolf and the grandma."

In addition to her daughter, Evelyn Krise is survived by sons Jeffrey Krise and Michael Krise of Burlington, N.J., and Scott Krise of Winter Park; daughter Andrea Krise of Altamonte Springs; brother, Donald Bohn of Greencastle, Pa.; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Forest City Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
