    • The following obituary was published in the online edition of SoMdNews.Com on April 18, 2012:

      Bret Carter Vahle, 49, Welcome

Bret Carter Vahle, 49, of Welcome died in a motorcycle accident March 31, 2012.

Born May 4, 1962, in Willows, Calif., he was the son of Dawn Camp of Welcome and Ralph Vahle of Merrit Isle, Fla.

Mr. Vahle grew up in and around Indian Head, living on the U.S. Navy base for several years as a child. When he was 16, he went to work for JL Morris, learning framing from the ground up. He honed his skills building many of the houses in St. Charles for SH Brooke Carpentry. He was a partner in AVMF and WYS carpentry companies, framing many of the custom homes in Southern Maryland. In 1996 he bought a computer and taught himself how to use AutoCad. He then started his own residential draftsman business, SCJA, Inc., which he operated until his death.

He loved his family and found joy in spending time with his children. He also loved reading, political discussion, MMA, learning Russian, guns and motorcycles. He enjoyed judging the homemade beer category at the Charles County Fair and had recently begun micro brewing his own brand label “Bret Brew.” Football season was his favorite time of year; he was an avid fan of the Oakland Raiders.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Deborah Hopkins Galt Vahle of Welcome; daughter, Sarah Vahle of Welcome; sons, Caleb Vahle and his wife, Kandice of La Plata and Jacob Vahle and Adam Vahle, both of Welcome; sister, Randi McWilliams and her husband, James of Port Tobacco; brothers, Tristan Vahle and his wife, Pamela of Nanjemoy, Tod Vahle and his wife, Erinn of Union Bridge, Marcus Vahle of Orlando, Fla. and Matthew Vahle of Merrit Isle, Fla.; and other aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. May 12 at First Baptist Church of Waldorf. A wake will follow at the family’s residence.
