  • Notes
    • It appears that Charles lied about his age on his application for a marriage license to Marguerite Louise Eakin (a 28-year old widow), saying in 1937 that he was 28 years' old, which suggests that he was born in 1899, when in fact he was born in November 1891.

He may also have lied when he said in that application that he was not being previously married.

According to the U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 (available on Ancestry.com), Charles and has brother Robert, living in Bellwood, Pennsylvania enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 30, 1911. His age was listed as 19 years and 9 months old, meaning he was born in November 1891.

According to the U.S. National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, 1866-1938 (available on Ancestry.com, Charles was stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas beginning on February 20, 1915. It is unclear how long he was stationed there.

A Charles Ashcom Lindsay was born on April 15, 1915 in Junction City, Geary Co., Kansas. His mother was Ruth Morris, who was buried in a single plot in Junction City, Geary Co., Kansas. I suspect that Charles A (b. 1891) was married to Ruth and was the father of Charles Ashcom Lindsay (b. 1915). This needs to be confirmed.

Moreover, a story carried by many newspapers in 1922 said that a Charles A. Lindsay, from Pittsburgh, forced an 18-year old woman named Mabel Sandberg at gunpoint to accompany him to New Jersey to get married. He was arrested and sentenced to six months in jail, after which he and Mabel did in fact get married, with the blessing of her parents. The stories said that Charles and his parents were from Pittsburgh and that he was an aviator in the military. That this is the Charles A. Lindsay is the same Charles A. Lindsay in the database needs to be confirmed.
