FREDERICK B. ERTZMAN
Frederick Bernard Ertzman, aged 64, died yesterday at his home, 4814 Chatsworth ave. He was born in old Birmingham, now the Southside. He learned the trade of a roller when nine years of age under the tutelage of his uncle, Benjamin Lauth, at Howard, Pa. His uncle was the inventor of cold rolled steel shafting and the "three high" plate mill. He worked for the Oliver Iron & Steel Co. from 1866 to 1879, when he went to Chess' old mill in Birmingham, where he rolled until 1877. For nearly 40 years he worked for what is now the National Tube department of the United States Steel Col, fomerly the Elba Iron Co., and had been a boss roller in that plant. He had been retired on pension for two years and was associated with his son, Emil Ertzman, in the automobile business. He was preparing to take a trip to Florida when stricken ill about three weeks ago. He was a member of the Knoxville Presbyterian church; Acme council, NO. 219, Junior Order United American Mechanics; Glenwood Tent, Maccabees; Guardians of Liberty and the Sons of Veterans. His father, F. H. Ertzman, was killed in the battle of Petersburg, while fighting as a member of Co. C, Pennsylvania cavalry. He is survived by his wodow (sic.), Mrs. Margaret Ertzman; one son, Emil B. Ertzman; one daughter, Mrs. William Frew Long; two grandchildren; one brother, Emil C. Ertzman, and three sisters, Mrs. John M. Campbell, Mrs. Henry McFarland and Miss Emma Ertzman.
