352	The following obituary was published in the January 16, 2013 issue of The Princeton Alumni Weekly: *John L. Bender â€™42 49 John Bender died Aug. 13, 2012, in Fairfax, Va. John was a native of Princeton. His father, Harold Bender, was professor of Indo-Germanic philology at the University. John prepared at Phillips Exeter Academy. At Princeton he majored in history and was a member of the Yacht Club and Cloister Inn. In 1941 he volunteered for active duty as an officer in the Coast Guard. He was assigned to anti-submarine duty off the American coast. In this capacity, he was part of the team that sank a German U-boat, an action for which he received a Bronze Star. Later his ship participated in the Okinawa campaign and downed two kamikaze aircraft. John retired as a captain in the Coast Guard Reserve. After the war, John returned to Princeton and received his bachelorâ€™s degree with honors. He also earned a masterâ€™s degree in history in 1949. In the early 1950s he joined the Army as a political analyst. He later served as an analyst for the State Department and held posts in Manila and Tel Aviv. His wife, Fredrika Pratt Bender, died in 1999. John is survived by his daughter, Margaret Butler; sons John â€™67 and James; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchil dren. To them all, the class sends condolences. *** The following obituary was published in the August 21, 2012 edition of the Washington Post: Published: AugustÂ 21, 2012** John L. Bender, a retired political analyst for the Army Department and the State Department, died Aug. 13 at the Virginian assisted living facility in Fairfax County. He was 91. He had dementia, said his son John F. Bender. Mr. Bender was a decorated officer of the U.S. Coast Guard and a World War II veteran when he joined the Army Department as a political analyst in the early 1950s. He later served as an analyst for the State Department and held postings in Manila and Tel Aviv. He retired from the Army Department in 1976. John Lewis Bender was born in Princeton, N.J. His father was a Princeton University professor and former department head of Near East studies. The younger Mr. Bender was a history graduate of Princeton University, where he also received a masterâ€™s degree in history. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II and received the Bronze Star for his part in the sinking of a German submarine off the coast of Nantucket. He later served as the commander of a Coast Guard cutter in Japan. He retired from the Coast Guard Reserve at the rank of captain. He maintained an interest in sailing and kept a boat, christened the Secret Sharer, in the Washington Marina for many years. He served as a volunteer with the National Park Service on the Mall and was a driver for the American Cancer Society, shuttling cancer patients to appointments. His wife of 55 years, Fredrika Pratt Bender, died in 1999. A daughter, Susan Bruch, died in 1998. Survivors include three children, John F. Bender of McLean, James H. Bender of Tampa and Margaret Butler of Hopedale, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.	John Lewis BENDER
353	The following obituary was published in the Colorado Srings Gazette on February 20, 2011: Karen Ann Spory SPORY Karen Ann Spory, age 67, resident of the Old North End, Colorado Springs, CO, passed away February 5, 2011 in Brownsville, Texas from complications following a stroke at the family winter home earlier in the week. Cremation has taken place. Karen was born on April 13, 1943 in Long Beach, California to the late Gabrielle and Wallace Benson. She spent her early child and teen years in Colorado Springs and graduated from the Cathedral School of St. Marys in Garden City, New York in 1961, attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Phillips University in Enid, OK, and completed the final work for her BA at California State, Dominguez Hills, in 1976. Karen married Ralph M. (Huck) Spory in 1962 after Huck's graduation from the United States Air Force Academy, and combined her schooling and subsequent teaching career with Huck's Air Force tours around the world, and the raising of their three sons. She taught science, physical education and foreign languages at several schools in the US and in Germany, and spent her entire adult life as a loving wife, companion and mother. She is survived by her husband, sons David (Elena), Erick (Kathy) and Christopher, (Lisa) along with grandsons Austin, Matthew, Harrison, Maximus and Benjamin, (and her faithful feline friend, Pepper). Karen enjoyed athletics of all kinds. She was an avid and talented golfer and scored holes-in-one on two occasions. She, Huck and family traveled extensively; in the process Karen had the opportunity to reconnect with her German heritage during the time they lived in and near Frankfurt for three years. Her time spent in Europe appeared to resonate deeply with Karen and her extended family. She will be remembered for her intelligence, her competitive spirit, her generous friendship, caring nature and her love of and charity for animals, as evidenced to a great extent by her service as a docent at the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville. Her final act of generosity was the donation of organs and tissues, thus prolonging life for many people she had never met. Karen was a member of First Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs. A memorial service will take place at the USAF Academy, beginning with a service at 10:00 a.m. on April 13, 2011 in the Cadet Chapel with a committal service following at the Academy Cemetery. A celebration of her life will take place at a reception in Doolittle Hall following the services. In lieu of floral tributes, donations to the Gladys Porter Zoo in Karen's name are suggested. 364	The following obituary was published in the Post-Gazette (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) on July 7, 1994" PAUL BERTHA, FORMER MAYOR OF WHITEHALL, SPORTS OFFICIAL Paul F. Bertha, former mayor of Whitehall and a high school and collegiate sports official, died yesterday of cancer in Jefferson Center Hospital. He was 74 and lived in Whitehall. Mr. Bertha, who was mayor in 1977, was employed by the Allegheny County Board of Property Assessment and Appeals as personnel director from 1957 to 1968 and as a member of the board of directors from 1978 until he retired in 1982. He also had 35 years' experience as a football, baseball and basketball official at the high school and collegiate level. Mr. Bertha refereed the 1967 Gator Bowl game, the 1970 Orange Bowl game and the 1972 Cotton Bowl game. He was inducted into the Western Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1979. An Army Air Forces sergeant during World War II, he is survived by his wife, Elva O'Brien Bertha; two daughters, Patricia Perry and Diane Reutzel, both of Whitehall; three sons, Daniel of Brentwood, Thomas of Pleasant Hills and Michael of Whitehall; three sisters, Eleanor Powlton of Baldwin, Ruth Becker of Whitehall and Jean Koval of Plainfield, N.J.; two brothers, Norman of Baldwin and Robert of Mount Oliver; and six grandchildren. 367	Dr. Michael Beuther, Jr., Th. D. (11/18/1522-10/27/1587) studied at various universities in Europe and was a guest for five years (1539-1544) in the home of Dr. Martin Luther. At the University of Wittenberg he studied under both Luther and Melanchthon. Later, upon graduation, he served as professor of history, literature and mathamatics at the University of Greifswald (1544-1548), a position secured for him by Melanchthon. He participated in the 1555 Diet of Augsburg. He later studied medicine in Padua, and yet later (1554) earned the Dr. of Jurisprudence degree in Ferrara, at which time noble status was personally conferred upon him. (At this time in history this status did not pass on to the next generation, but was individually earned.) He concluded his career as professor of history and law at the Academy in Strassburg, France (1565-1587), where he died in 1587. He authored several scholarly volumes, writing in the Latin language. 370	Johann studied at the University of Basel and was ordained as a Reformed clergyman upon graduation. He served as a pastor in Barbelroth (1666-1677) and then was promoted to superintendent of teh Bergzabern Protestant Diocese, where he served from (1677-1685). Becasue of war between Germany and France during this period, he served four years--1681-1685--in exile in Heidelberg, Germany. In 1685 he became pastor in Gemuenden near Hunsrueck and later served as pastor in Nierstein until his death. 371	Maximilian became the "Amt Schulteiss" (Mayor or County Chairman) of Wegelnburg, County. He held that position and lived in Schoenau in 1745. He retained this position until his death in 1776. He suffered a stroke on March 9, 1776 and he died on March 11, 1776. He and his wife Marie Elenora had 10 children, nine of whom were living in 1783. They include a pharmacist and several governmental forestors serving in the Lorraine Department of France. Half of the children married ordinary craftsmen and citizens in teh Amt Wegelnburg vicinity. 372	Michael was the "Hochstift-Wuerzburgischen Amtmanns" in Karlstadt on the Main. As such, he was the first advisor to the Amt Karlstadt officials and later became a government official himself. He married into the Drach family, an equally famous family of government officials.	Michael Beuther
373	Michael earned a B. A. degree in Strassburg, France in 1576, an M.A. degree in in Wittenberg, Germany in 1584 and a Th. D. degree from the University of Basel, Switzerland in 1601. He was court preacher and later general superintendant of churches in Zweibruecken, Germany. He wrote a number of books in Latin and German and was widely known as a forceful preacher. Also surviving are two sisters, Marjory Leonard of Keokuk and Kathryn Anderson of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Ruth Jones of Davenport. Robert was born in 1921 in Vinton, Iowa, the son of George Hampton Bickel and Kate Moon. He graduated from Vinton High School in 1938, from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy in 1942. Until November 1945, he served in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps. In 1943 he married Joan Hady in Boston and following Navy discharge they raised their family in Iowa City. For seven years he was a pharmaceutical representative for Parke Davis Company and until retirement in 1983, was owner and operator of the Pearson and Pearson Towncrest Pharmacies in Iowa City. Robert was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City from 1947 to 1996. In 1996 Robert and his wife Joan moved to Meth-Wick Retirement Community in Cedar Rapids and joined Christ Episcopal Church, Cedar Rapids. She was an Antique Dealer, Election Judge, and Census taker for many years. She was a Master Gardner, avid collector of junque, a member of the Macoupin County Military Support Group, Macoupin County Historical Society, Macoupin Antique Tractor Club, Crimson Chapeau Red Hat Society, and former Girl Scout Leader. Jo Ann also enjoyed sewing, quilting, flower gardening, and attending auctions and yard sales. She is preceded in death by her mother, infant sister; Helen Victoria Bilbruck, brothers; George, Bill, Jack and Donnie Bilbruck. She is survived by husband Dale, daughters; Betty Jo Noll, Becky Lowrance, and Melinda (Kerry) Huff, all of Carlinville, grandchildren; Milena (Lucas) Crum, Meghan Lowrance and Ryan Long of Springfield, great granddaughter Abella Long and 2 step grandchildren, sister Marjorie Thomason of Jacksonville, TX and brother Bob Bilbruck of Los Angeles, CA. Two United States navy sailors were drowned in Lake Michigan yesterday when the heavy seas dashed a yawl carrying fifteen men against the south pier at the naval training station at Lake Bluff. Five men were thrown into the water. Two were rescued after feats of heroism and one saved himself. The dead are: Robert N. Walters, chief gunner's mate. Enlisted at Philadelphia. Goms, Jr.: George was born in Stillwater, Minnesota on Sep 22, 1858, was one of two sons of Bradford Wilson Bixby, who was born in Massachusetts (or Coopers Plains, Steuben, New York), and his wife, Susan Jane (Clarke) Bixby, who was born in Maine. The other was Tams Bixby, born on Dec 12, 1854, at Staunton, Virginia. On Nov 5, 1892 in Livingston, Montana, George married Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Morris) Hines, a widow with two children: Mrs. W. P. [Addie] Brown of Minneapolis and Floyd Hines of Wagoner, Oklahoma, both born in Valparaiso, Indiana. George and Lizzie had five children: Bradford M. Bixby, Mrs. C. E. [Ostera E.] Flanigan, Mrs. Read [Helen Mary] Bilbruck, Mrs. Sherman [Esther Louise] Cross, Mrs. Henry [Georgia Pat] De Coux. George was a clerk and accountant for several government and private businesses and later was an Indian agent. Muskogee Daily Phoenix, 9 Nov 1937 George Bixby, 79, Pioneer Muskogeean, Dies in California Was Brother of Late Tams Bixby And Served as Accountant On Daily Phoenix George Bixby, 79, former Muskogee resident and & brother of the late Tams Bixby, pioneer owner and publisher of the Muskogee Daily Phoenix, died yesterday in San Francisco at the home of a daughter, Mrs. George [misspelled, supposed to be Georgia] DeÂCoux, according to word received here. Mr. Bixby, an expert accountant, left Muskogee in 1923 and went to California a year after the death of his wife, the former Mrs. Elizabeth Hines. He was employed as an accountant in several Muskogee firms, including the Daily Phoenix. In 1900 he was one of five employees who served under the late J. Blair Shoenfeld, at that the time United States Indian agent here. Others of the five were Bob Taylor, J. Fenterss Wisdom, Mrs. Blanch Oppenheim and Lyman K. Lane. Mr. Bixby war born in Red Wing, Minn., the son of the late Bradford and Susan Clark Bixby, and was of a pioneer New England family. A stepson, Floyd Hines, an employe (sic) in the county treasurer's office, lives in Fort Gibson. Other survivors include four daughters: Mrs. DeCoux, Mrs. Ostara Flannigan [or Flanagan], of San Francisco, and Mrs. Esther Cross, at Mexia, Texas, and Mrs. Helen Bilbrouck, of San Francisco. Husband of Ruth Waddell Boehmer and the late Ruth L. Boehmer; father of William D. Boehmer of Jefferson Boro, Alison Engelman of W. Richland, WA and Richard H. Boehmer of Newark, DE; brother of William C. Boehmer of Deep Creek and David A. Boehmer of Upper St. Clair; grandfather of Christina, Ashley and Jeffrey. Friends received at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, Saturday 7-9 and Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 pm where Funeral Services will be held on Monday at 11 am. Herbert was former President of Boehmer Heating & Cooling, a WWII veteran and had many hobbies including flying, sailing, golf and bicycling. Boehmer A long-time member of the Pittsburgh Soaring Club, Herb also served as a tow pilot. He and his glider pilot brothers, Bill and Dave, owned a series of aircraft together, most recently a Cessna 206, hangared at Allegheny County Airport. Herb was a member of AOPA and SSA. His nephews David and Steve are also glider and power pilots and his grand daughter Christina, age 12, took her first glider ride in memory of him and now is planning to solo on her 14th birthday. Her mom, Linda Sue (SEL and SES) soloed in a 2-22 shortly after his death, pursuing a glider rating. Herb towed for her first glider lessons.
